Permanent eyeliner, also referred to as micropigmentation or dermal pigmentation along the periocular region, is a advanced cosmetic tattoo procedure that provides semi-permanent definition along the lash lines of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is performed by a professionally licensed and trained technician using a specialized machine to implant hypoallergenic pigments into the superficial dermal layer of the skin. The technician will select pigments in black, brown, or gray tones that match the client's natural lash color and desired look. Sharper, crisper lines tend to be achieved with darker blacks and grays while softer, smokier effects use lighter brown and black mixes. Pigment is strategically implanted along the lash line to mimic eyeliner, with the option for thicker, thinner, smudged, or tapered shapes. The client's eyes will first be cleaned, measured, and mapped out. Topical anesthetic drops and creams are used to allow for a comfortable procedure. Using microblading techniques, the technician will make microscopic feathering strokes with the machine's fine needles to deposit color along the lash lines. This takes 1-2 hours for completion of both upper and lower lids. Over the following week the color will heal and set into the skin, going through an initial lightening of intensity by up to 50% as the pigment stabilizes. Results typically last 1-3 years before gradually fading over time. Follow up maintenance visits can refresh the vibrancy of the eyeliner.
